Well, you’ve found yourself at UPJ or you’re just genuinely curious about what college students do for fun, this article is compiled through the collaborative efforts of four UPJ students who all have varying interests. These are the things that we collectively agreed upon as not just things for the bored UPJ student to do but ‘fun’ things to do. To note, fun things to do in Johnstown are not just constrained to this list, believe it or not, we really had a tough time compiling just ten things to do. As I always say, “If you’re bored in Johnstown, you want to be.” So, get out and explore the Greater Johnstown area and you will be pleasantly surprised by what this city has to offer.
- Stadium Pub & Grille-
Located on the corner of John’s and Washington Street, Stadium Pub & Grille is the perfect place to enjoy a fun night out with friends, with a loaded menu that has something for everyone! The Stadium Pub & Grille offers both indoor and outdoor seating for customers, along with local live music and fun events such as trivia and bingo nights with a new guest host each week.
2. Laurel Highlands Hiking Trails-
The LHHT is a 70-mile section of trail starting at Ohiopyle state park and ending at the Conemaugh Gorge in Johnstown. Seasoned hikers will hike the entire trail, while novices may choose a certain section of trail to do and then camp at one of the shelter sites located along the trail. Further info can be obtained through the PA DCNR. The LHHT is a nationally recognized trail enjoyed by hikers from around the world. It is not uncommon to meet hikers from almost any state in the US on this trail.
3. Coal Tubin’-
Coal Tubin’ is a company located on the outskirts of Johnstown that capitalizes on the rich natural beauty of our area combined with city infrastructure to make your trip an easier and more enjoyable experience. Coal Tubin’s most famous attraction is the lazy river tubing on the Stonycreek river, also, water level dependent, they offer unique whitewater trips on the most continuous rapids on the east coast, as well as, bike rentals, and an adventure shuttle service.
Located four miles from campus, Woodside is a UPJ staple for any student looking to go out and have a good time. A drink menu just as diverse as the characters you will meet there, will quench your thirst as well as provide for an interesting night out. Woodside also offers college nights on Thursday with live music every Saturday.
5. Escape Rooms Johnstown-
Looking for a team building experience? Or just a way to have some fun? Located on Clinton Street in Downtown Johnstown, Escape Rooms Johnstown is the perfect place! Your team will have sixty minutes to escape one of the mysterious rooms. After completing the escape room, enjoy one of many great places Johnstown has to eat!
6. Richland Town Center-
Not even five minutes away from campus, Richland Town Center is a wonderful place to get your hair and nails done or dine in with friends for a delicious meal. The town center offers every necessity to create a better college experience with its affordability.
7. Bottle Works-
Located on 411 3rd Avenue in the historic cultural district of Cambria City, Bottle Works is the best place to release your artistic creativity. Artists can bring their art for exhibition, teach to those who are interested, create, and sell their artwork. Not only that, but musicians perform for locals to enjoy. Bottle Works is truly the place to go wind down and relax after a long week.
8. Balance Resturant-
A great option for those looking to experience downtown Johnstown, with an outdoor seating option when the weather is just right. Balance not only has a well curated menu of food, but Balance also offers a large drink menu for those hankering for a well-crafted alcoholic beverage.
9. First Summit Arena-
First Summit arena is an indoor sports complex, offering anything from concerts to dirt bike rallies. The arena is also home to Johnstown’s hockey team, the Johnstown Tomahawks. Tomahawk games offer a fun night out to watch some good hockey players that are just starting their careers. The arena also offers public skate nights during the week for anyone who wants to hone their skills on the ice.
10. Sargent’s Stadium
Now home to the ‘Johnstown Mill Rats’, a prospect league baseball team, Sargent’s Stadium is an affordable night out for the sports fan and non-sports fan alike as there is much to do on the many different ‘theme nights’ at the stadium. Tickets starting at $6 it is a great night out without breaking the bank. This stadium is also the venue for a AAABA tournament hosted there every year in which the stands are always packed with a large crowd ready to watch some baseball. The field is also host to football and soccer games especially during the rainy season as the field is made from astro turf.
